Airtel Africa CEO to step down

Airtel Africa announced the promotion of director of transformation Sunil Taldar to managing director and CEO, as current chief executive Olusegun Ogunsanya will retire this summer.

In a statement, the African operator group detailed that Ogunsanya will vacate his role from July 1. He joined Airtel in 2012 to run Airtel Nigeria and its mobile money company until 2021 when he was promoted to group CEO.

Airtel stated the departing CEO was responsible for maintaining double-digit revenue growth for the group and delivered new innovative products across its markets.

Following his departure Ogunsanya will take an advisory role to the chairman and become chair of the group‘s charity arm.

Incoming CEO Sunil Taldar, joined Airtel in October 2023 and will now commence the transition to take the reins from Ogunsanya. Taldar will be appointed to the board as an executive director before taking the role of CEO in July.

Taldar previously held roles with Bharti Airtel and is currently responsible for strategy in transforming business and operations.

Airtel Africa chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said: “The Board is delighted to appoint Sunil Taldar as the Group's next Chief Executive Officer. His industry experience, strategic vision, constant customer focus and proven record of delivery will enable him to deliver our strategic objectives and to lead the Group in the next stages of its development.
