Telecom Egypt finalised a deal to host AFR-IX Telecom's Medusa subsea cable which will connect to the Red Sea through the operator's network by the end of 2025.
In a statement, the operator said Medusa will connect from the city of Port Said and then tap into landing stations in Suez, Zafarana, and Ras Ghareb through Telecom Egypt’s extensive terrestrial crossing network.
The new connection will also enable Telecom Egpyt direct access to all Medusa Mediterranean landings in Europe and North Africa to the Red Sea.
Telecom Egypt and AFR-IX Telecom signed an initial agreement to land Medusa in Port Said’s landing station in March 2022. The deal will connect ten African and European countries - Portugal, Morocco, Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. The cable will become operational in the Western Mediterranean in 2025.
Telecom Egypt managing director and CEO Mohamed Nasr said: “This new agreement provides additional connectivity solutions and increases diversity in the submarine cable infrastructure reaching the Red Sea, marking a significant milestone in the industry.”
